On Tuesday, October 28, alongside Aaron Shames, I had the pleasure of moderating an event for the Lee & Bernard Jaffe Family Jewish Book Festival showcasing the book Tiny Pep Talks. It was such a fun and uplifting experience! The evening was filled with laughter, thoughtful insights, and meaningful moments as the authors (and very funny comedians), Paula Skaggs and Josh Linden, shared their unique blend of humor and heartfelt advice.

One of the evening’s highlights was the audience’s participation; everyone got involved, cheering each other on and joining in the spirit of positivity that the book embodies. It truly felt like a room full of encouragement and connection.

Tiny Pep Talks is a refreshing reminder to celebrate life’s small victories and find joy in the everyday. I highly recommend this book as it’s both hilarious and deeply motivating. I’m already looking forward to the next release, the Tiny Pep Talks: For Teachers, which promises even more inspiration tailored to educators.

Fourth-grade students at Strelitz International Academy engaged in an exciting blend of STEM education and cultural exploration as part of the school’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Incorporating themes from recent Jewish holidays: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot, students applied their inquiry skills in a series of creative, hands-on experiments, encouraging critical thinking and collaboration.

One highlight of the afternoon was a science activity inspired by the symbolic Tashlich tradition. In this experiment, students dropped cubes of baking soda into vinegar, resulting in a fizzing chemical reaction. This visual display represented the act of letting go of the old – much like the traditional casting off sins into flowing water.

The fourth graders also explored the concept of density with a sweet twist. Using honey, oil, and water, they observed how these liquids interacted, discovering how each one layers based on its density. The experiment also linked back to the holiday symbolism of honey, representing a sweet start to the new year.

The grand finale was a structural challenge: building mini sukkot out of marshmallows and other materials. Each group designed and constructed their own sukkah, testing its strength and stability against simulated desert storms. This activity highlighted their creativity and engineering skills, as well as the PYP’s focus on fostering open-minded, reflective learners.

This afternoon of science and cultural connection allowed the students to deepen their understanding of both key scientific concepts and the rich traditions that inspire community and reflection—hallmarks of the IB approach to education.

Thursday, November 21, 6:30 pm Sandler Family Campus

Strelitz International Academy, in partnership with the Simon Family JCC, will present Lenore Skenazy, founder of the Let Grow movement and author of Free-Range Kids, for an engaging event at the Simon Family JCC. Skenazy, who has been a leading voice in promoting independence for children, will share insights from her groundbreaking book and discuss how schools, parents, and communities can empower young learners to develop resilience, confidence, and autonomy.

Skenazy gained notoriety after writing about her decision to let her nine-year-old son navigate New York City’s subway system alone. This bold parenting choice earned her the title of “America’s Worst Mom” from some critics, but also sparked a national conversation about how much freedom and responsibility children should be given. Out of this debate grew the Free-Range Kids movement, which advocates for giving kids more independence to explore the world at their own pace, without unnecessary restrictions or fear.

As the founder of Let Grow, Skenazy leads efforts to promote childhood independence, with a focus on shifting how schools and parents think about safety and growth. The Let Grow movement encourages initiatives such as ‘Let Grow Projects’ in schools, where children take on challenges independently, helping them build problem-solving skills, responsibility, and self-confidence.

During her talk, Skenazy will delve into how these ideas can be integrated into both home and educational settings such as Strelitz International Academy. SIA is particularly excited to have her speak, as the school recently partnered with the Let Grow movement in its efforts to foster a culture of independence among the Primary Years (PY) students.

All community members, parents, and educators are invited to attend this event. It promises to be a thought-provoking discussion, filled with practical advice and a new perspective on raising confident, capable kids.

An independent school serving students from infants and toddlers through kindergarten and then to 5th grade, Strelitz International Academy recently earned full accreditation from the Virginia Association of Independent Schools.

Founded in 1973, VAIS is the leader in advancing and advocating for independent school education in Virginia. The VAIS accreditation program is one of a select few recognized at the international level through the International Council Advancing Independent School Accreditation. VAIS also is recognized and approved by the Virginia Board of Education through the Virginia Council for Private Education (VCPE).

Strelitz International Academy was established in 1955 to provide exceptional education in Tidewater. As the first Primary Years International Baccalaureate (IB®) World School in the area, SIA offers a specialized curriculum that is both challenging and globally focused. The academy prioritizes inquiry-based learning to inspire and encourage students to explore within and beyond classroom walls. With a diverse student body and a dedication to building a rich, inclusive community, SIA works to nurture the next generation of compassionate and knowledgeable global citizens.

“Parents can be sure that when choosing a VAIS-accredited school for their children that the school has been through an intense period of self-reflection and evaluation which strengthens the entire institution,” says Betsy Hunroe, executive director of VAIS. The voluntary accreditation process is a rigorous undertaking involving a comprehensive self-study, including input from all school constituents. A team of peer evaluators from VAIS member schools spends several days on campus reviewing the self-study report, documentation, and curriculum, meeting with administrators, trustees, students, parents, and teachers, and observing campus life. The team concludes the in-depth visit with a detailed written assessment. The finalized report is then submitted for accreditation approval by the VAIS board of directors.

“At Strelitz International Academy, we take great pride in our commitment to excellence, and accreditation serves as validation of our ongoing efforts to maintain and exceed the highest standards of educational quality,” says Heather Moore, SIA head of school.

“Our VAIS visit presented an opportunity for us to showcase the exceptional work of our dedicated faculty, staff, and students. It was a chance for us to celebrate our achievements and reflect on areas for growth and improvement,” says Moore. “I encourage every member of our community to take pride in our collective accomplishments and to continue supporting our shared vision of educational excellence. Together, we will ensure that Strelitz International Academy remains a beacon of excellence in education, setting a standard that distinguishes us from others in the region.”

To learn more about SIA, visit https://strelitzinternationalacademy.org/.
The sun shone brightly on Sunday, June 2 as students and their families from the Strelitz International Academy Mitzvah Club gathered at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront for a beach cleanup event that blended service with fun.

The day began with laughter as children played with bubbles and created colorful chalk art on the boardwalk, setting the tone for the community effort ahead.

Armed with gloves, trash bags, and a strong sense of purpose, the volunteers spread out across the beach to pick up litter. The initiative was not only about cleaning up the environment but also about embodying the Jewish value of “Tikkun Olam” — the concept of repairing the world.

Participants collected bags full of trash, including plastic bottles, food packaging, and other debris – turning the beach into a cleaner, more inviting space for everyone to enjoy.

After the cleanup, the group took a well-deserved break, enjoying a moment of relaxation on the now pristine beach. The event ended with participants feeling a deep sense of accomplishment and community spirit.

Contributing approximately 500 bottles of water to the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center, helping to provide essential hydration to those in need.

Collecting and donating 100 winter coats, ensuring that many could stay warm during the colder months.

Gathering and distributing 300 books to REACH, promoting literacy and the love of reading among children.

Raising and donating $268 to the Benjamin Goldberg Foundation, supporting important causes and research.

Students in Lavette Ricks’ Early Years 3 class at Strelitz International Academy were inspired by Michael Rosen’s story, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt to go on their own ‘bear hunt’ at school. So, Ricks brought the story to life and created the experience for her students who gathered binoculars and maps and prepared for the big adventure.

To start this lesson, Ricks introduced the story to her students as well as the adapted song version sung by The Kiboomers. Since the text is predictable and the rhythm is catchy, the students developed creative-thinking skills to dramatize the story over a few days. Ricks focused on the prepositions in the story such as over, under, and through. Next, the students made a list of what they might need in each scenario, and together they analyzed the list and started preparing. Each child designed their own binoculars and a map to navigate to the cave. Maps included the elements mentioned in the story such as tall wavy grass, a big river, mud and, of course, their end location; a cave.

Outside of the classroom, Ricks set up each site. The first scene was ‘tall wavy grass,’ where students enjoyed pushing through green streamers. Next there was a ‘big river,’ and with the help of blue streamers, students had to “swim” their way through. The third obstacle was mud. To create this scene, Ricks used a sensory table and brown paper which hid colorful Baby Bear Counters. As students sorted through the ‘mud,’ they counted and collected the bears they found, which tied in their math skills. And finally, what is a bear hunt without a bear? Students made their way to a ‘dark cave’ where two stuffed bears were waiting. Just like the story, the kids spotted the bears and ran all the way back to their classroom.

Teaching students to go beyond the book is SIA’s approach. It starts in the Early Years program and follows students throughout their educational journey.
