The phrase that best describes the recently completed Camp JCC Summer 2025 is “tremendous growth.” In addition to the number of campers this past summer, “tremendous growth” refers to the growth of the Camp JCC program over the past five years.

In summer 2025, more than 270 campers attended Camp JCC, which is the highest total since reopening after the pandemic. Campers attended from Hampton Roads, California, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, and Richmond.

Camp JCC camper weeks grew nearly 20% higher from 2024, resulting in the need of an additional group.

This year, Camp JCC employed its largest seasonal staff with excellent counselors, multiple activity specialists, and fully staffed camper care and leadership teams. More than half of this large staff have worked at Camp JCC for three summers or more. An additional demonstration of continuity was the promotion of former Camp JCC unit head Kate-Lynn Cipolla to the role of assistant camp director, in part to help promote and manage the tremendous growth of the Camp JCC program.

Activity offerings also grew this summer. Beyond the favorite camp classics such as lip sync, boat building, surfing with Sababa, and the color run, new weekly themes and special events were added to an already robust summer calendar. Camp JCC had a STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering, and Mathematics) specialist in addition to arts, fishing, sports, and Israeli culture specialties. Each specialist added fun, meaningful, and hidden educational content to special events throughout the summer. STEM contributed greatly to the inaugural Camp JCC “Shark Week” and “Watermelon Day,” the Shinshinim added a lot to Israel Day and the visit from the Israeli Scouts Friendship Caravan, and everyone played a role in making the “Summer Superbowl” and halftime show memorable and impactful.

Camp JCC was the place where children could experience many options, while being a part of a summer of tremendous growth.

For five hot days, July 27 – August 1, TeamVB’s four-person squad competed against delegations from across the country, plus Ukrainian, Israeli, and Canadian delegations at the JCC Maccabi–Access Games in Tucson, Arizona.

Returning athletes from Tidewater joined athletes from various regions of the United States to field teams in boys’ 3v3 basketball and girls’ soccer, while one local athlete continued to dominate in Access, for Jewish athletes ages 12-22 with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The teen delegation from Virginia Beach was led by Tom Edwards, Simon Family JCC athletics director and accompanied by supportive family members including Tal, Tamir, and Hila Zach, as well as Lauren Karp Scolnick and Brigitte Bryant Gottlieb.

The weeklong Olympic-style games kicked off with an opening ceremony that featured comedian Eitan Levine, Israeli DJ Artifex, and speakers such as Israeli Olympian Judoka Ori Sasson and U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani. The almost 1,300 Jewish 13- 17-year-olds sang and danced at one point, creating a mosh pit in front of the stage. After, the tired teens left the venue and went home with their host families, with pleas from organizers to get good sleep and hydrate.

Ashten Konikoff and Leo Gottlieb opened day one play in 3v3 17U boys’ basketball with three games, ultimately losing all three but fighting hard throughout. Simultaneously, Shanny Zach and her mixed 17U girls’ soccer team from Carolina/Cleveland/Tucson/Miami Beach/Long Beach/San Antonio/San Diego played their first couple of games. The team ultimately lost both games, but Shanny made multiple jaw-dropping saves to keep them close.

On day two things really started to heat up; 14-year- old Oliver Scolnick medaled twice, a bronze medal in bowling and a gold in the 25-meter swim. #TeamVB also experienced a first when Tamir Zach, a #TeamVB alumnus and spectator, was bestowed a Midot Medal for his spontaneous volunteering as a soccer coach and as a united swimmer in the pool for the Access swim races.

Ashten and Leo’s team also found their groove, going 2-1, including pulling a huge upset over Indianapolis. After which, the boys’ basketball teams did their JCC Cares project, creating boxes of snacks and hygiene products for local teens in need.

That same evening, participants had a chance to destress and let loose with a big night out at a huge arcade and movie complex in downtown Tucson.

The Access Games came to a close with a luscious closing ceremony breakfast, which graciously acknowledged all the amazing people involved in lifting the inclusive program to ever greater heights. This was also the first day of the playoff bracket for Leo and Ashten’s squad, who earned the number four seed, facing Colorado/Vancouver/Memphis/Kentucky. After a tight game, the squad suffered a crushing defeat.

Shanny’s team put up a valiant effort against the number one team from Philadelphia/Boston in the bronze medal match later that day.
Sadly, they were unable to come away with a medal, but their persistence, sportsmanship, and camaraderie were extremely commendable.

The closing party in Tucson concluded a week of passion, competition, and teambuilding, giving competitors the opportunity to hang out, talk, and eat with fellow athletes from other delegations.

Onward to the 2026 JCC Maccabi Games & Access in Kansas City, Kansas!
Dave Flagler
Even though it is only Passover, there are many hints that Camp JCC is right around the corner.

Some signs are unmistakable: warmer weather, spring break, and a greener looking outside. Other hints are more subtle. Camp stealthily sneaks its way into many conversations throughout the year. For example, a mention of camp could pop up during complaints about cold weather and longing for summer days. Another mention might come at the end of a basketball practice after having fun with familiar friends. Sometimes, excitement about camp is expressed directly, whether it is excitement to be at camp or something that triggers a reference to a happy memory from a previous summer.

As the weather continues to warm, an increase of camp references will certainly be sprinkled into conversations, building excitement for the summer ahead.

To learn more about Camp JCC, or to hear about year-round opportunities for teens in the community, contact Dave Flagler, director of camp and teen engagement, at DFlagler@UJFT.org or 757-452-3182.

Seven members of the Team Virginia Beach delegation to the JCC Maccabi Games & Access 2024 arrived on August 5 at the Houston airport at 1 am – delayed but excited for the upcoming competitions. More than 1,700 teens from across the globe convened in this Texan city ready to immerse themselves in sports and recreation over the next five days.

The young men and women from Tidewater teamed with other communities to compete in several contests: girls 16 and under (16U) soccer and boys 16U and 14U basketball. One athlete, 13-year-old Oliver Scolnick, competed in Access games for Jewish athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Families travelled to the Lone Star State, too, to cheer on these local athletes despite Texas’ summer heat. In the spirit of the coinciding Paris Olympics, the Tidewater athletes brought home several medals. Along with her FTL United teammates from Ft. Lauderdale, San Diego, and the Virginia Peninsula, Shanny Zach’s first soccer game for girls 16U ended in a 6-1 victory over Argentina; her team later won the gold medal by beating Dallas 3-1 in the finals. Henry Scolnick, Ashten Konikoff, and Leo Gottlieb, along with one player from Stamford, Conn., combined to create the 16U boys three versus three (3v3), basketball VB-STM team. During tournament play, these four teenagers battled teams from Houston/ Ukraine, Boca Raton/Orange County, Nashville/VA Peninsula, and Moise Safra of New York City. Wins were elusive, but the boys fought hard.

The NashVB entry for 14U boys 3v3 basketball, led by Coach Chris Queman, had two local players, Eli Lomogda and Caleb Bailey, and two players from Nashville. Along with a great win over Springfield/Stamford on day 1, the team earned the #5 seed before upsetting the #4 seed, Houston, at the start of the tournament. The #1 seed, powerhouse Kansas City, with a monstrous teen playing center, underestimated NashVB in the semi-finals; the teams battled the entire game, and NashVB almost pulled off a huge upset.

Oliver Scolnick brought home TeamVB’s first medals in the games, with two silvers in individual and team basketball. He continued to dominate in the Access competitions, including a perfect score of 10.0 to win the gold medal in the vault. His team earned silver in the floor exercise relay before Oliver claimed the gold medal in base-tennis, and he even ruled the pool, with an individual gold and a relay silver.

Henry Scolnick, who has never met a stranger, earned two distinctions outside of athletic performance. First, the JCA Jacksonville delegation gave him an honorary bronze medal in recognition of the camaraderie he brings to their experience at JCC Maccabi. Second, the 3v3 basketball sports commissioner extended a Midot Medal (for individuals or groups who epitomize the ideals of sportsmanship and character) to Henry for the palpable influence that his sportsmanship and kindness had upon the entire venue. Henry also earned a silver medal in pickleball doubles play.

The 2024 games closing party ended in Texas style with bull (and shark) riding, armadillo racing, DJ music, dancing, Kona Ice, photos with a live Texas steer, and delicious brisket.

Onward to the 2025 JCC Maccabi Games & Access in Tucson, Arizona!

Proud to support Jewish military families, PJ Library is piloting a new Military Parent Connector program in partnership with the JWB – Jewish Chaplains Council and United Jewish Federation of Tidewater.

Although Parent Connectors have been in PJ Library communities for years to help make meaningful connections and create fulfilling programing for parents and children, Military Parent Connectors specialize in creating a Jewish home for military families in just three areas throughout the U.S. Tidewater is one of those areas.

Acting as a concierge for families new to the area or those ready to establish connections with the local Jewish community, the program strives to connect families with established Jewish institutions, plan military-friendly events, and help families develop relationships with other PJ Library families stationed alongside them.

With more than 100 Jewish military families in Tidewater, programming with the local community has included monthly Jewish-themed story time at Van Wyck Library in Ghent, a Havdalah experience, Baby & Me on select Fridays, an afternoon at Surge Adventure Park, women’s workout class at Ascend Bungee Fitness, a Jewish Family Brunch and Shooting Range with the men’s group, Nadiv, watercolor painting class, and a women’s class led by Amy Lefcoe.

Ongoing experiences include select Friday Baby & Me’s at the Simon Family JCC with special guest speakers, weekly Parsha class on Tuesdays with Amy Lefcoe, and monthly Jewish themed story times at Van Wyck Norfolk Library.

Next year, plans include building off of Ohef Sholom Temple’s Wiggles and Giggles program for children up to four years old on a rotating monthly Sunday at various venues, as well as considering a Jewish-themed book club for middle schoolers, among other potential programs.

Jewish Military families who are interested in connecting should email Arielle Ross at PJTidewater@gmail.com and join the local Facebook group.

Arielle Ross serves as the Tidewater Military Parent Connector.

As the weather gets warmer and summer gets closer, Camp JCC wrapped up another successful spring break camp. Covering one week for mostly public school closures, campers enjoyed spring themed crafts, indoor and outdoor games, STEM projects, a mini color war, and free swim with new and old friends. Daily themes included April showers, May flowers, nature exploration, and Earth Day.

Now as a part of the Camp JCC School Days Out program, families were able to choose any individual days or a package for the entire week. As many school calendars are not aligned with each other, having the flexibility to customize schedules enabled campers to enjoy time with family and friends, spring travel plans, and all the fun of Camp JCC.

To learn more about Camp JCC, or to hear about year-round opportunities for teens in the community, contact Dave Flagler, director of Camp and Teen Engagement, at DFlagler@UJFT.org or 757-452-3182.
