Richmond, Va. – Ann Rae Gershman, 93, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, friendship, and resilience.
Born on March 20, 1933, Ann Rae grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, where her intelligence and determination were evident from an early age. She graduated as valedictorian of Maury High School, a reflection of the dedication and work ethic that would define her throughout her life.
Ann Rae shared 53 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Jerry Gershman, until his passing in 2005. Together they built a family that was the center of her world. She is survived by her children: David Gershman (Lydia), Marcia Patton, and Karen Gershman; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Nothing brought Ann Rae greater happiness than being surrounded by her family, whom she adored unconditionally.
Ann Rae was blessed with an extraordinary circle of lifelong friends. She had a gift for making people feel welcome, often greeting everyone with her signature southern “Hi, darlin!” Her friendships were built on authenticity—she always told it like it was, but did so with kindness, respect, and genuine care for others. She accepted people exactly as they were.
An accomplished bridge player, Ann Rae’s passion for the game took her across the country to tournaments, where she formed lasting friendships and achieved the distinguished rank of Ruby Life Master. Bridge was more than a game to her; it was a lifelong source of challenge, camaraderie, and adventure.
Those who knew Ann Rae will remember her unwavering positive outlook, incredible resilience, and exceptional ability to organize and plan just about anything. She approached life’s joys and challenges with grace, optimism, and determination, inspiring those around her by the example she set every day.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
A graveside service was held at Oakwood Hebrew Cemetery in Richmond. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
