Virginia Beach – Jay M. Woodman, 77, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 7, 2026.

Jay was born in Hampton, Va. to the late Theodore and Frances Woodman, and was preceded in death by his in-laws, Shirley and Leon Harris, and son-in-law Joel Prohofsky. Jay is survived by his loving wife, Marsha, two daughters Jennifer Stern (Dani) and Shana Prohofsky, and his four grandchildren, who were the lights of his life. Jay also leaves behind his sister Sheila Preville, brother Roy Woodman (Sandy), sister-in-law Lori Beim (Mike), brother-in-law Eric Harris, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins.

As a teenager, Jay met the love of his life, Marsha, to whom he was married for 56 years. After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University, Jay and Marsha raised their family in Virginia Beach, Va., where Jay first worked as a corporate buyer for national grocery chains, and later co-owned with Marsha, the restaurant, Jay’s Deli. The Deli, as it was known to friends and customers, was a hub of family and community life. Employees were like family, and no one was a stranger. Not satisfied with retirement after the sale of the business, Jay returned to the grocery world, most recently working at The Fresh Market, where he continued to share his deep knowledge of the food industry and was able to remain connected with old customers and friends.

Jay had many hobbies including fishing, Nascar, football, DIY home projects, and gardening. But Jay’s main interest was always his family. Jay was quick to lend a helping hand or a word of advice. A devoted family man, Jay’s memory will rest in the hearts of all who loved him.

A memorial service was officiated by Rabbi Jacob Herber at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Norfolk Chapel. Burial followed at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
