Norfolk – It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved Matthew Julian Gutterman on October 12, 2026.

Born in Norfolk on May 8, 2000, Matthew was the son of Marc D. Gutterman and Theresa L. Gutterman.

Matthew was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Maury High School. Matthew was a kind, sweet, and generous soul whose heart was as big as his love for the people around him. A hard worker with a selfless spirit, he was the kind of person who would drop everything to lend a helping hand to a friend or neighbor in need. His kindness was genuine, his friendship was treasured, and his presence touched the lives of so many. Matthew was deeply loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Matthew found happiness in life’s simple pleasures and in the adventures he shared with his friends. He loved fishing with his buddies, catching waves whenever he could go surfing, gardening, cycling, and sharing his immeasurable passion for cooking. But perhaps nothing brought him more joy than music. A true lover of the jam band scene, Matthew cherished attending music festivals, camping under the stars, and making memories with friends.

Whether listening to Dead & Company, Goose, Phish, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Brown’s Island Band, or the many other bands he loved, music was a part of his soul. The music, the friendships, the freedom, and the unforgettable moments were all part of what made him happiest.

Above all else, Matthew’s greatest love was his family. They were his heart, his home, and his greatest treasure. The love he gave so freely will forever remain in the hearts of those closest to him.

Matthew’s life was a gift to so many. His kindness, generous spirit, love of music, and the countless memories he created will live on through the people he loved and the lives he touched. Though his time with us was taken far too soon, the love he gave and the light he brought into this world will never be forgotten. He will be missed beyond words, loved beyond measure, and remembered forever. His song will never end.

Matthew was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Aunda Bober Coppa and paternal grandmother and grandfather Julian Gutterman and Marilyn Comess Lacey. He leaves behind to cherish his memory: Parents: Marc Gutterman and Theresa Gutterman; his brother, Jon Lilly and wife, Sarah Lilly and daughter, Ziva Lilly; his sister, Amanda Stark White and husband, Robert Lock and daughter, Marley Qynn Lock; and his sister, Morgan Satoris Gutterman.
