Chesapeake – Barry Blum of Chesapeake, Virginia, passed away October 12, 2026.
He was born March 1, 1962, in Norfolk, Virginia to Sheldon and Gloria Blum.
Barry was always a self-starter and embraced everything to the highest degree. In high school he was the tennis champion, and then he taught himself to play the bass guitar where he spent many hours alone in his room practicing with the likes of Stanley Clarke and Eric Clapton. We thought the house would fall down with the constant pounding of the bass. In college he played with many bands and learned how to record, produce, and perform music.
After graduating, he continued playing music with the ever-popular Janitors. He also taught himself to play golf and along with his father, became one of the founding members of Greenbrier Country Club in Chesapeake. He became a scratch golfer very quickly. His strategy was to practice with one club each time to master each one. He was so driven and got to a point where he was almost banned from tournaments as he was such the ringer. He was the owner of the snack bar in his father’s Bingo Hall. In his later years he worked and managed a magazine call center and moved on to open his own call center business. Barry had a great sense of humor and had the tendency to be just a bit crass as he basically had no filter. His motto was “tell it like it is.” We had many hilarious, fun moments with him at home in our early years growing up.
Barry is survived by his sisters, Marcie Blum of Virginia Beach (Wayne Doolin), and Susan Blum Geers of Boca Raton, Fla. He was a beloved uncle to Megan Geers and Ian Geers (Lauren Grace Thompson), as well as many other family members.
Barry was preceded in death by his parents, Sheldon and Gloria Blum and his brother-in-law, Hans Geers.
A memorial service for Barry was held at Altmeyer Funeral Home Southside Chapel. Online condolences may be expressed at www.altmeyerfh.com.
The family requests memorial contributions to any animal rescue.
