Virginia Beach – Marilyn Comess Lacey, 93, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Marilyn was born to Esther and Morris Comess on January 6, 1932, in Norfolk, Virginia. She was predeceased by her sister, Dianne Kay, and her second husband, Gerald Lacey.

Marilyn enrolled at the University of Iowa, then later graduated from Old Dominion University. She dedicated her professional life to helping children as a speech therapist with the Virginia Beach School System, where she touched countless lives. “Mrs. Lacey,” as she was known to many, had a deep love for all her students and approached her work with patience, kindness, and empathy. The classroom was more than a vocation for Marilyn, who thrived most when helping others.

Outside of her work, Marilyn found great joy in caring for animals and had a special passion for rescuing them, especially her many dogs and cats. She was known by all who knew her as caring, compassionate, and selfless, always placing the needs of others before her own.

She is survived by her two children, Renee Gutterman Scruggs and Marc Gutterman; one stepson, Chris Lacey; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, all of whom will cherish the memory of “Nanu” and the love she so freely gave.

A service to celebrate Marilyn’s life was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk.

Marilyn’s legacy lives on through the many lives she touched—with gentle words, a generous heart, and unconditional love.
