Panel discussion celebrates Jewish history on BroadwayVirginia Stage Company and UJFT partnership

Sunday, March 16, 2 pm, Wells Theater, Norfolk

Virginia Stage Company will produce the cult-classic musical Little Shop of Horrors at the Wells Theatre in Norfolk, March 12 through March 30. The quirky show’s book, lyrics, and music were written by Jews – lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken. They are, of course, only two of the Jewish voices who have contributed to Broadway’s rich history.

Following the show’s matinee, Temple Israel’s Rabbi Michael Panitz will join Tom Quaintance, VSC’s artistic director, for a conversation, “Shaping the Sound of Broadway: The Influence of Jewish Composers on American Theater.”

The conversation will explore the rich legacy of Jewish composers who revolutionized American musical theater and helped shape Broadway. From the early 20th century to the golden age of Broadway, Jewish composers such as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim brought their unique musical heritage and creativity to the stage, crafting timeless scores that continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.

Panitz and Quaintance will celebrate the impact of the visionary artists who blended traditional Jewish music with American popular styles to create some of the most iconic shows. From Porgy and Bess to West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof, their works entertained millions and challenged societal norms, advancing both the art form and cultural conversations.

Whether a Broadway aficionado or new to the world of musical theater, this is an opportunity to discover how Jewish culture, history, and resilience have left an indelible mark on the Broadway stage.
