The Emmy-nominated documentary film, Defiant Requiem, will be shown as part of the Virginia Festival of Jewish Film at the Tidewater Community College Roper Performing Arts Center in Norfolk.

The film tells the story of Rafael Schachter, a brilliant young Czech conductor who created a prisoner choir at the Theresienstadt concentration camp, and with one copy of the score of Verdi’s Requiem, taught his fellow prisoners to “sing to the Nazis what they could not say.”

The event is co-sponsored by the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater’s Holocaust Commission. A discussion following the film will feature Maestro Murry Sidlin of the Defiant Requiem Foundation and Timothy Hensley of the Virginia Holocaust Museum.
